Often people use long words in church.  It is better to explain things so that anyone can understand.  On this page, I am only using words which are used very often - the ten hundred most used words.  I want to explain what I believe using these words.  Explaining things simply helps us think about what things really mean and what is important.

God created the world and everything in it.  All that he created was good.  He also created men and women. He put these people in control...

Not many of us are good at following written instructions.  When we buy something, we want to just get on and use it rather than looking through an instruction manual.  Only when we can’t get it to work properly do we give up and sit down with the manual.  Our attitude is often “if all else fails, read the instructions”.

Sometimes even reading the written instructions is not enough.  Recently, I was trying to change the light bulbs in my elderly father’s flame effect electric fire.  H...

It is now five years since the first of these posts in 2014.  Since then, I have written 60 articles on a variety of subjects.  However, with every article my aim is constant and twofold.

Firstly, I want to encourage those who do not yet believe and trust in Jesus to think about who Jesus is and what that means for our life today.  I want to dispel the idea that Christianity is about religious observance and being good enough to one day go to heaven.  I long for people to recognise th...

If you received an invitation to meet with a member of the royal family, would you accept it? If you already had plans for that day would you re-arrange them so that you could accept the invitation?
You would certainly tell friends and family. When the day came, you might be both excited and nervous. Afterwards, the memories would stay with you for ever. How amazing that you received such an invitation and experienced that meeting! That one-to-one encounter was so different to seeing them on th...

In February, with Valentine’s day mid-month, it is often a time to think about love.  There are different kinds of love: romantic love, parental love, brotherly love, …

It is within our nature to want to be loved, to feel that other people value and cherish us.  And we have a natural tendency to want to show love and affection to others too.  If we do not have other people to love and care for, then we often bestow our love on a dog or on other pets.

It may surprise you to learn that the Bib...

Do you know what the best-selling book was last year?

It may surprise you to know that it was the same book that was the best-seller the previous year and the year before that.  Because one book outsells all others every year.  It has also been translated into more languages than any other book.

That book is the Bible.  Far from being old-fashioned and irrelevant, the Bible is as relevant and important today as it has ever been.  It is hard to fully appreciate much of English Literature with...

Christmas decorations can speak to us of Jesus – think about them as you decorate your tree.  A star led the wise men to Jesus.  An angel announced the birth of Jesus to the shepherds. A candy cane is in the shape of a letter J for Jesus.  Christmas lights remind us that Jesus said “I am the light of the world”.

The tradition of giving Christmas presents is sometimes said to originate from the gifts that the wise men brought to Jesus – gold, frankincense and myrrh. So, as we give and r...

In summer, many of us travel to different parts of the country or different countries of the world for holidays.  Some go in search of adventure and excitement.  Others pursue hobbies and interests which take them to different places.  But for many, it is relaxation and peace which is being sought far from home.  Many holidays may compromise a mixture of these elements.

On the coast or in the countryside we can get away from the busyness of work and everyday life – maybe somewhere...

Talking to people who do not attend a church, I often find that they think that they should not go to a church service if they do not believe.  Others think that it would be hypocritical to go to church because they are not good enough.

If you feel like that then let me tell you that you would be very welcome to come to any of our church services.  If you are not a Christian, or are not sure whether you are, then coming to church could help you work out what you do and don’t believe.  You may f...

The theme for the Village Festival on Saturday 9th June is “Heroes and Heroines”.  No doubt, in the procession we will be reminded of some real-life heroes as well as some fictional super-heroes.
Fictional super-heroes tend to each have some super-power: Spiderman can climb vertical walls; Superman can fly; etc.

Real-life heroes are often famed for their courage in the face of danger, their perseverance against opposition or their strength of character.

However, there is one real person who sta...
