Jesus loves you far more than you can ever fully know.

The first verse of one of our Christmas carols goes as follows:

Love came down at Christmas,

Love all lovely, Love divine,

Love was born at Christmas,

Star and angels gave the sign.

This was first published as a Christmas poem in 1885 by Christina Rossetti.  The love spoken of in this carol is the love of God.  But this love is not impersonal – God expressed his love for us supremely by coming to Earth himself and being born as a baby.  God is l...

Most of us could do with more joy in our lives.

We can find joy in various ways.  A beautiful sunset or an amazing view may lift our spirits.  An achievement such as better-than-expected exam results or success at work may really brighten our mood.  Events such as the birth of a baby, a wedding, a birthday party, a reunion or a homecoming – can be really joyous occasions.

Adverts on television and websites and in newspapers and magazines try to sell us the idea that various products wil...

At this time of year, the nights start drawing in and the number of daylight hours is much less than in the Summer.  Putting the clocks back at the end of the month so that it gets dark even earlier in the evening makes this even more noticeable.  Many of us start to miss the amount of daylight which we enjoy in the Summer.  This can affect our mood – for some people quite mildly, but for others very severely. Light is vital to everyday life and natural light is very different from artificial l...

Often people use long words in church.  It is better to explain things so that anyone can understand.  On this page, I am only using words which are used very often - the ten hundred most used words.  I want to explain what I believe using these words.  Explaining things simply helps us think about what things really mean and what is important.

God created the world and everything in it.  All that he created was good.  He also created men and women. He put these people in control...

Not many of us are good at following written instructions.  When we buy something, we want to just get on and use it rather than looking through an instruction manual.  Only when we can’t get it to work properly do we give up and sit down with the manual.  Our attitude is often “if all else fails, read the instructions”.

Sometimes even reading the written instructions is not enough.  Recently, I was trying to change the light bulbs in my elderly father’s flame effect electric fire.  H...

It is now five years since the first of these posts in 2014.  Since then, I have written 60 articles on a variety of subjects.  However, with every article my aim is constant and twofold.

Firstly, I want to encourage those who do not yet believe and trust in Jesus to think about who Jesus is and what that means for our life today.  I want to dispel the idea that Christianity is about religious observance and being good enough to one day go to heaven.  I long for people to recognise th...

If you received an invitation to meet with a member of the royal family, would you accept it? If you already had plans for that day would you re-arrange them so that you could accept the invitation?
You would certainly tell friends and family. When the day came, you might be both excited and nervous. Afterwards, the memories would stay with you for ever. How amazing that you received such an invitation and experienced that meeting! That one-to-one encounter was so different to seeing them on th...

In February, with Valentine’s day mid-month, it is often a time to think about love.  There are different kinds of love: romantic love, parental love, brotherly love, …

It is within our nature to want to be loved, to feel that other people value and cherish us.  And we have a natural tendency to want to show love and affection to others too.  If we do not have other people to love and care for, then we often bestow our love on a dog or on other pets.

It may surprise you to learn that the Bib...

Do you know what the best-selling book was last year?

It may surprise you to know that it was the same book that was the best-seller the previous year and the year before that.  Because one book outsells all others every year.  It has also been translated into more languages than any other book.

That book is the Bible.  Far from being old-fashioned and irrelevant, the Bible is as relevant and important today as it has ever been.  It is hard to fully appreciate much of English Literature with...

Christmas decorations can speak to us of Jesus – think about them as you decorate your tree.  A star led the wise men to Jesus.  An angel announced the birth of Jesus to the shepherds. A candy cane is in the shape of a letter J for Jesus.  Christmas lights remind us that Jesus said “I am the light of the world”.

The tradition of giving Christmas presents is sometimes said to originate from the gifts that the wise men brought to Jesus – gold, frankincense and myrrh. So, as we give and r...
