Filling the Hole

1 Aug 2017

Do you feel empty?  Is there a hole in your life? Do you sometimes feel that there must be more to life than you have experienced so far?  If so, you are not alone.  This feeling is a common one and has been around for centuries.  It has been described by a wide variety of people, including Blaise Pascal in the 17th century, C.S. Lewis in the 20th century and several modern celebrities.

Many people experience this sense of emptiness and try to fill it in various ways.  Fame, fortune and possessions are tried and found wanting.  Friends, family and relationships can bring much comfort but ultimately do not fill the hole completely.  Tobacco, drugs and alcohol may deaden the pain for a while but, in the end, leave us emptier than before.

Where does this emptiness come from and why is it there?

In the Bible we read in the book of Ecclesiastes that God has “set eternity” in our hearts.  So, there is something deep within us that is crying out for God – even if we do not recognise it as such.  St. Augustine wrote “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you”.  Others have described this as a “God-Shaped Hole” that nothing else can fill.

Christians find that a living relationship with God through Jesus Christ fills this hole and satisfies that need.  Knowing God’s love deep within does something inside us that nothing else outside us can do.  That does not mean that once we have accepted God into our lives everything will be easy.  But once we give God his rightful place in our lives it does start to put everything else into its proper place and perspective too.

To find out how to find that peace with God which will satisfy our deepest longings, come along to church one Sunday morning at 10:30am.  We would love to meet with you and to share with you our personal experience of knowing God.  It does not matter what age you are or what your background is – we will welcome you and so will God.
